The manufacturer's warranty is something the manufacturer offers. Your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit on top of that and they don't expire on the same day.
Goods have to be of acceptable quality, and part of what that means is lasting a reasonable time given what they are and what you paid. A $900 dryer dying at 14 months is not obviously reasonable, and "the twelve months is up" is not an answer to that.
The question that tends to move things, asked in writing:
How long do you consider it reasonable for this product to last, given the price I paid?
And then ask them to put the answer in writing too. It's hard to say "fourteen months" out loud.
If the fault is major, the choice between a refund, replacement or repair is generally yours, not theirs. Retailers routinely offer a repair as if it's the only option.
If the shop won't budge, your state's fair trading body handles this and it costs nothing to ask them.
