Can I get a cash refund when United cancels my flight?

When United must issue an automatic cash refund for a cancelled or significantly changed flight, why a travel credit is not a refund, and how to complain to the DOT.

Yes — and the right does not depend on United agreeing to it. Federal rule requires an automatic refund to your original form of payment when the airline cancels a flight or changes it significantly and you decline the alternative offered. "Automatic" means the airline is supposed to issue it without you having to ask, and "original form of payment" rules out being quietly switched to a travel credit instead.

The rule does not care why the flight was cancelled. A weather cancellation is refunded exactly the same way a mechanical or scheduling cancellation is — the cause only affects whether United owes you meals or a hotel for a controllable disruption, never whether it owes you your money back if you choose not to fly.

A significant change is defined, not left to the airline's judgment: a departure or arrival more than three hours later domestically or six hours internationally, a different departure or arrival airport, an added connection, or a downgrade in class. Once you decline the new flight, the refund is due within seven business days for a card purchase. If United instead pushes a travel credit or lets the refund run late, the complaint goes to the DOT — airlines are shielded from most state-level consumer claims, so the Department of Transportation is the actual venue with jurisdiction.

Frequently asked questions

Does United have to offer cash, or can they give me a travel credit?

If you decline the rebooked flight, you are entitled to a refund to your original form of payment, not a credit. Say in writing that you are declining the alternative and requesting a refund — don't let a credit be issued by default.

Does a weather cancellation change anything?

Not the refund. The refund rule is cause-blind. Weather only affects the extras — meals and hotel commitments are tied to disruptions within the airline's control, so a genuine weather event generally does not obligate United to provide those.

Am I owed anything for the disruption itself, beyond a refund?

Not under federal law. The US has no fixed cancellation payout like the EU does. What you are entitled to is your money back if you don't travel, plus whatever United has publicly committed to for controllable disruptions.

How fast should the refund arrive?

Seven business days for a credit card purchase, 20 calendar days for other payment methods. A refund that runs later than that is itself grounds for a DOT complaint.

Where do I actually complain?

The Department of Transportation, at secure.dot.gov/air-travel-complaint. Airlines must respond to complaints filed there, and it is the body with real jurisdiction over airline refund rules.

What if United just ignores my letter?

Silence is not a dead end — it starts a clock. United is expected to respond to a formal complaint within 30 days. Build your letter with us and we track that deadline for you: a countdown check-in two weeks in, and if they miss the deadline, your escalation to your state attorney general’s consumer protection office arrives pre-filled and ready to lodge. Escalating is free.
